DESCRIPTION:Due to unforeseen circumstances\, this class will no longer be available. \n  \nThis class introduces students to plantable paper and all of the fun of using recycled materials to make beautiful plantable paper Christmas Ornaments. With the guidance of Jennifer Galvin\, we will be using recycled mat board to create Christmas shapes embedded with seeds. Even beginners will enjoy this workshop. If you’ve been interested in learning how to work with plantable paper\, this class is for you!  Jennifer will bring all of the supplies for students to make pulp and then make plantable paper. Everyone will go home with several plantable  ornaments with seeds inside. Feel free to bring your own cookie cutters if you want a particular shape for your plantable paper\, otherwise\, all materials will be provided. Class limited to 12.

SUMMARY:Water Batik- with Robin Poteet
DESCRIPTION:It sounds like an unlikely combination\, but paints & wax can create fantastic results! We’ll draw images on rice paper. Then paint from light to dark & use melted canning wax to “protect” underlying areas & colors. This process continues until entire the surface is covered with paint & wax. Then we get out an iron! The results are ALWAYS colorful\, delightful & surprising. Students of All Levels will enjoy this workshop. \n\nPLEASE BRING:\n• PAINT: Yellow\, Red\, Blue\, Brown and a few of your other favorite colors should do. Either watercolor or acrylic (or combination)\n• PALETTE: Room for putting out dabs of paint AND mixing. A glass plate works.\n• BRUSHES: Inexpensive ones (not good sable brushes). A synthetic round #4\, #8\, and #12\, a flat 3/4” is plenty.\n• A regular pencil and eraser\n• A black Waterproof Pen: either a Micron 01 or an Ultra Fine Point Sharpie (a different\nbrand\, as long as it’s waterproof & has a fine point).\n• A roll of paper towels\n• Great paintings to mount on stretched\, gallery wrapped canvas. 6” x 6” is a great size.\n(I can provide larger paper to wrap up to an 8 x 12 canvas.)\n• BRING plenty of photos or sketches to work from. Scenes from where you live\, simple landscapes\, animals\, birds\, flowers… nothing overly detailed. Navroski began to be more passionate about choosing a medium with meaning.  He chose to paint on feathers.  Feather painting is a creative method to symbolize the powerful meaning of feathers which represents honor\, trust\, strength\, wisdom and freedom.  A unique one of a kind “art” that is deeply revered and a sign of high honor from the heavens.   Ronald has won numerous awards and his feathers are displayed in the Shop of Alleghany Highlands Arts and Crafts Center\, as well as other shops throughout Virginia.

SUMMARY:EXPLORATION IN ACRYLICS: Cow Friends with Barbara Rowe
DESCRIPTION:Paint your own cow portrait with guidance from Alleghany Highlands resident artist Barbara Rowe. Students from teen to adults will choose and paint from a variety of cow pictures and the workshop includes a step-by-step demonstration.  This workshop will be on April 29th from 10am to 3:30pm with a break for lunch. The Cost is $55 and includes a prepped canvas. \nStudents will need to bring acrylic paints and brushes.  The following acrylic colors are recommended: \n\nTitanium white\nUnbleached titanium\nMars black (or other black)\nBurnt umber\nRed oxide\nRaw sienna\n\nThe following brushes are recommended:\n\nFilbert size 8\nFilbert size 4\nFan size 10\nShader size 8 and 0\nA Round or two\n\n(Folks can bring a brush variety pack if they wish)\nBarbara has lived in neighboring Rockbridge County for over 30 years\, raising 3 children. She worked in higher education administration for 25 years and retired from W & L University. After taking a ‘Process Painting Awakening the Creative Workshop” she began painting. Mostly self-taught\, Barbara enjoys painting animal portraits.

SUMMARY:EASTER PLANTABLE PAPER with Jennifer Galvin
DESCRIPTION:This class introduces students to plantable paper and all of the fun of using recycled materials to make beautiful Easter plantable paper.  With the guidance of Jennifer Galvin\, we will be using recycled mat board to create Easter shapes embedded with seeds.  Even beginners will enjoy this workshop.  If you’ve been interested in learning how to work with plantable paper\, this class is for you!  Jennifer will bring all of the supplies for students to make pulp and then make plantable paper.  Everyone will go home with a few plantable papers with seeds inside. \nFeel free to bring your own cookie cutters if you want a particular shape for your plantable paper\, otherwise\, all materials will be provided. Class limit of 15 (13 to adult) and costs $25 \nVirginia based artist\, Jennifer Galvin\, reclaims discarded material and gives it new life-old t-shirts\, jeans\, and mat board are transformed into intricate works of art.  Jennifer has been making paper since 2002 and has a degree in art from Oregon State University.  Her love for making has gradually evolved to painting with paper-pulp painting. As the pulp becomes the painting\, it is transformed into something entirely new-something beautiful out of what was once discarded.  Jennifer loves the hope that comes from giving objects a second life-seeing promise in the forgotten\, hope from hopelessness.\nJennifer Galvin has 25+ years of experience in art instruction.  Jennifer has taught art to people of all ages in printmaking\, papermaking\, and painting.  Jennifer is currently on the Artists Roster at the Virginia Commission for the Arts.\nJennifer’s pulp paintings have been shown regionally\, nationally\, and internationally\, and have won several awards in National Juried Exhibitions. She is a member of LAPMA (International Association of Hand Papermakers and Paper Artists)\, NAHP (North American Hand Papermakers)\, FCCA (Fredericksburg Center for the Creative Arts)\, and her work is shown locally here at AHACC.

SUMMARY:INTRODUCTION TO DRAWING - Kyle Keyser
DESCRIPTION:This course presents the most important and useful things to know about drawing: the elements of art\, line\, shape\, form\, value\, color and texture.  Using a variety of drawing techniques and exercises\, Kyle will help lead students to a final project.  Students should be 18 or older and there is a maximum of 8 so register soon!  The cost is $40 for this 4-week workshop is every Tuesday beginning on March 7th. SUMMARY:"DIP YOUR TOES IN THE POUR" - Libby Burger
DESCRIPTION:Paint pouring is a way to create beautiful wall art and home décor for your home.  Acrylic paint pouring is a type of fluid art.  It consists of pouring different color paints over a surface.  The entire canvas is then tilted to allow the paint to flow in different directions to cover the edge of the canvas. \nA description of the types of pours will be reviewed at the beginning of class.  Samples will be provided for the students to view.  Students will create an abstract painting using an acrylic pour on a 9″ X 12″ canvas. They will select the colors desired and the type of pour they wish to use.  All supplies will be provided.  Libby is encouraging age 10 into adulthood to come try this fun medium.  The cost is $35 and agrees to a limit of 8 students.  The date of this class is March 25th from 10:30 am to 3:30 pm. \nLibby calls herself  “a jack of all trades – a master of none”!  Since retirement she began to delve into the arts.  She is a student herself\, taking various classes in different mediums\, especially watercolor and acrylic.  However with acrylic pouring she is self-taught through online demonstrations and classes.
