SUMMARY:"The Sacred & The Secular" along side "Fx2: Photo Show" going on in The Gallery.
DESCRIPTION:“The Sacred & The Secular” is a selection of Nativity scenes and Santas from local collectors that have been added to the Gallery\, to add a holiday flare to the Fx2 Regional Photography \nNativity on loan from Cathy Walton Drummer & Wanda Walton \nexhibit. Nativity sets include one from Cathy Walton Drummer and Wanda Walton with numerous extra features set the stable scene: a well\, water pots- even a fire to take of the chill of the night air for the shepherds\, Wise Men and Mary\, Joseph and the Christ Child. A second ceramic set from St Andrew’s Episcopal Church includes fewer figures but lots of mosaic sparkle. Other sets include a small white china set by Lenox\, a highly colorized set of figures made of anodized titanium\, by South Carolina jeweler Truman Teed and an African set made with banana leaves and wire that is eloquent in its simplicity. \nThe Santas are just plain fun! Many are hand made and use all sorts of materials from kitchen funnels to felted wool. Why not take a break from all the stress of the season and come enjoy these pieces? Just grab your mask and come enjoy the shows– and don’t forget to vote for your favorite photo for the People’s Choice award in the Fx2 Regional Photography show! On display until December 28\, but the Center will be closed at 1pm on Christmas eve and Christmas Day!

SUMMARY:"Paris Portfolio & Close To Home" by James Knipe
DESCRIPTION:James Knipe is a retired photography professor from Radford VA will present images of decaying buildings that depict the “relationship between the clearings we create for our houses & barns and the aggressive advance of nature to reclaim the soil”\, and a series of scenes from a fellowship to Paris. Knipe has collections of work in The Virginia Museum of Fine Arts and many fine art museums in VA\, MN\, AZ\, MN\, IA\, and TX\, as well as privately owned galleries. \n“My photographic journey has taken me throughout America\, as well as to many foreign countries…I have worked for years along the banks of the New River and Roanoke River…I have lost myself in the dense verdant vegetation that resists access to these areas\, trudging along paths worn down by fishermen along the same banks…Life’s journey has tendency to take you to places not marked by a direct path.  We end up finding aspects of the world intriguing\, discovering alleys and byways we were not cognizant of when we began our journey.” ~ James Knipe \nThis FREE exhibit is in the Gallery beginning July 5th.

SUMMARY:Photographs-Robert Sulkin
DESCRIPTION:An exhibit of photos by Robert Sulkin will be in the Gallery beginning July 5th through July 29th. \nRobert Sulkin lives in Roanoke\, VA and is Professor Emeritus at Hollins University\, where he taught photography from 1980 to 2019. He holds a BA in History from UNC Chapel Hill and an MA and MFA in Art from the University of Iowa. Sulkin’s work has been exhibited solo\, invitationally and competitively in Virginia and as far away as California. As such\, they exist as pieces of paper with tone and occasional color and hopefully a visual presence. While they might reference the actual world\, I believe one would be hard pressed to encounter their content as one goes about their business in daily life.” ~ Robert Sulkin \nThis FREE Gallery exhibit is open to the public daily Monday – Saturday from 10 am to 4:30 pm & Sundays from 1 pm to 4 pm.

SUMMARY:"Art Decade" by Clifton Forge Native Knic Umstead
DESCRIPTION:“Art Decade\,” an exhibit of work by Clifton Forge Native Knic Umstead\,\nwill open Tuesday June 22\, 2021. The exhibit includes pieces from 8 different series of work. It includes several painting media\, photography\, collage  and digital images. Some of the work is representational and much of it has abstract qualities.\n“At its core\, art is communication- a visual language that supersedes spoken words and specific tongues. The art I make comes from a desire to make tangible repetition of visual questions and input from my other  senses– the unseen.”  ~Knic Umstead\nUmstead’s work is thoughtful\, sometimes challenging but most of all\, engaging.  He currently teaches at Radford University\, Virginia Tech and is a Lead Coordinator for the Summer Residence Governor’s School for the Visual and Performing Arts.\nJoin us in the gallery between June 22 and July 23.  Admission is free.

He has also received multiple awards and honors for his photography. \n“In both my studio constructions and landscapes constructed in Photoshop\, photography has allowed me to leave behind the rational world and explore a world I imagine based on how things look rather than what I know.
