SUMMARY:"THE BRIDGE" by Claudia de Franko
DESCRIPTION:Claudia de Franko\, a free-lance artist who lives in Troutville\, VA\, creates black & white and unusually toned photographs that capture “life as it is” in many unusual locations across the world.\nShe has studied art at Hollins University\, Prague and in New York City. As she has traveled\, de Franko has used her camera to reflect human experiences far different from the world of rural Virginia. She has won several awards for her photography\, which has been featured in various publications and been exhibited nationally and internationally. One characteristic of de Franko’s work is that she rarely prints an image twice\, assuring that her patrons acquire a unique\, archival object. She is the owner of Gala Studios and Mexoteca. \nThis exhibit\, which she calls THE BRIDGE\, moves beyond her photographs\, including  several mixed media scrolls that suggest deeper exploration of her inner self. The show will also include several three-dimensional works that include fiber and found objects\, reflecting some of her other interests (needlework\, heritage and memory pieces). These are unusual and thought provoking\, hinting at her personal altars\, family and other life reflections. Taken together the works serve as a bridge between outer observation and inner revelation.  Make sure you stop by the gallery and see THE BRIDGE at the AHACC Gallery from July27 –  Aug.  20\, 2021

SUMMARY:"Art Decade" by Clifton Forge Native Knic Umstead
DESCRIPTION:“Art Decade\,” an exhibit of work by Clifton Forge Native Knic Umstead\,\nwill open Tuesday June 22\, 2021. The exhibit includes pieces from 8 different series of work. It includes several painting media\, photography\, collage  and digital images. Some of the work is representational and much of it has abstract qualities.\n“At its core\, art is communication- a visual language that supersedes spoken words and specific tongues. The art I make comes from a desire to make tangible repetition of visual questions and input from my other  senses– the unseen.”  ~Knic Umstead\nUmstead’s work is thoughtful\, sometimes challenging but most of all\, engaging.  He currently teaches at Radford University\, Virginia Tech and is a Lead Coordinator for the Summer Residence Governor’s School for the Visual and Performing Arts.\nJoin us in the gallery between June 22 and July 23.  Admission is free.

SUMMARY:"The Sacred & The Secular" along side "Fx2: Photo Show" going on in The Gallery.
DESCRIPTION:“The Sacred & The Secular” is a selection of Nativity scenes and Santas from local collectors that have been added to the Gallery\, to add a holiday flare to the Fx2 Regional Photography \nNativity on loan from Cathy Walton Drummer & Wanda Walton \nexhibit. Nativity sets include one from Cathy Walton Drummer and Wanda Walton with numerous extra features set the stable scene: a well\, water pots- even a fire to take of the chill of the night air for the shepherds\, Wise Men and Mary\, Joseph and the Christ Child. A second ceramic set from St Andrew’s Episcopal Church includes fewer figures but lots of mosaic sparkle. Other sets include a small white china set by Lenox\, a highly colorized set of figures made of anodized titanium\, by South Carolina jeweler Truman Teed and an African set made with banana leaves and wire that is eloquent in its simplicity. \nThe Santas are just plain fun! Many are hand made and use all sorts of materials from kitchen funnels to felted wool. Why not take a break from all the stress of the season and come enjoy these pieces? Just grab your mask and come enjoy the shows– and don’t forget to vote for your favorite photo for the People’s Choice award in the Fx2 Regional Photography show! On display until December 28\, but the Center will be closed at 1pm on Christmas eve and Christmas Day!
