New Summer Exhibit

August 11, 2018

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every day that begins at 2:00am, repeating until August 17, 2018

Anne Way Bernard and husband Steve Bernard first connected when they were students at Virginia Commonwealth University in Richmond in the early 70’s.  Since then they have exhibited widely across the state.  They live and work in a beautiful setting at the foot of Cahas Mountain in Franklin County.  The two artists have exhibited extensively in Virginia, both individually and together in juried and open exhibits.  Since 2013 Anne has taught 4 week painting classes from their Franklin County Studios.  In 2014 Steve was awarded a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellowship in Drawing.  Anne’s work is mostly representational-landscapes and portraits that can be recognized by identified by her rich use of color, energetic brush strokes, and the multiple layers of paint that create a rich textural surface.  She also can work abstractly, as you can see in “Kudzu and Pokeweed”, it is easy to see where the start of “Summertime” might have come from.

Steve has worked as a painter as well, but today he focuses on pastels, using the color and energy of abstracted lines and shapes to suggest ideas and images.  His titles often give the biggest clue about what was in his mind- and to his sense of humor.  Who can resist the lure of “Frog Tantrum” or “Old Theme Town”?  The energetic lines and bright colors suggest the essentials of the idea and image, allowing viewers to add their own thoughts.  Together, these two artists serve up a tasty summer treat!  #cfva
