Fridays Featured Artist: Larry McNeil

“I started working wood in New Hampshire in my early twenties restoring post and beam barns & houses which then led to carpentry & cabinetmaking and then to furniture restorer. When I retired the wood lathe found me. I am fascinated by the process of turning wood. The spinning wood becomes a bowl, vase, pen or platter. With every creation I am looking for a pleasing proportion, shape, color, balance & style. I use different woods to create different outcomes. Curly maple has an interesting grain or holly has an elegant
understatement. The creative possibilities are endless. I find myself eager to discover the mystery hidden inside. This keeps me turning.”

It’s Wish list Wednesday! This week we are featuring Volunteer Betsy Carter. You couldn’t avoid it forever Betsy (she’s been dodging me for months but I finally caught up with her). As you can tell she has great taste, with quite an interesting color palette I might add. Thank you for participating Betsy!

The Virginia Tech Carilion School of Medicine Office of Community Engagement is now inviting submissions for our 2024 Summer Art Exhibit.
“Sons of the Village” The Art of Fatherhood

Throughout history, artists have honored their fathers, their own paternity, and famous fathers in their art. The theme of this exhibition is centered on the idea that fatherhood is both a personal responsibility and a communal one.
We are inviting submissions from all artists, regardless of age or background. Artists are encouraged to explore the theme in their own way and to submit pieces that represent their unique perspectives on fatherhood (being one, becoming one, having one, not having one) and/or the role of the collective community in raising all its children.
Our guest curator and feature artist will be retired Roanoke educator and youth mentor, Fletcher Nichols.

Show dates are June 11 through August 30, 2024

Artists are invited to submit up to three pieces of work reflecting the theme. Art can be two or three-dimensional, and all media will be accepted. *Works must be delivered to the school no later than Monday, May 20.*

To submit photos of your work or ask questions about the show, contact Courtney Powell – cbrakes@vt.edu or 540-526-2588.

Fridays Featured Artist: Ruth McMullan

Ruth was interested in architectural design early on and while serving in the Air Force, she began to work on a nursing degree. During this time, she kept her creative side going, working with beads, drawing and pen & ink. One of her first pen & inks was in response to a National Geographic Magazine photo. She began experimenting with animals who were heavily camouflaged, like the cheetah and perfected her black and white pen & inks. Ruth also loved bead work and began with flower wreaths that resulted in her interest in the shadow patterns of beads above the paper from the strong studio light. She also makes beaded Christmas ornaments in beautiful snowflakes and poinsettia patterns
