Alleghany Highlands Arts & Crafts Center Summer Intern 2023

Eligibility: College student majoring in art, in arts education, or arts management
When:  May 29, 2023, to August 4, 2023, 30 hours a week. Flexible Scheduling.

Duties

  • Executive Director: The intern will be introduced to understanding the role and responsibilities of the director of a nonprofit art center. They will be given the task to increase AHACC’s exposure on Instagram and Twitter, while developing an efficient plan to populate data on all AHACC’s social media platforms. They will attend at least 2 organizational meetings (i.e., Clifton Forge Main Street, Town Council, Arts and Community Stakeholders), and attend AHACC Board meetings.
  • Classroom: Assist art teachers in their classrooms, including organizing materials and clean up.
  • Gallery: The Curator will introduce the intern to exhibition installation, lighting, and publicity. They will assist the Curator in take down and the installation of exhibits, completing appropriate documentation, such as artist contracts, receiving/return forms, and labels. They will work with artists to produce a biography/artist statement to create gallery guides, press releases and social media.
  • Shop: The Shop Manager will introduce the intern to the established Shop protocols, and all aspects of the Shop, including the duties of volunteers who act as docents and cashiers. Assist Shop Manager with receiving consignor work including the jury process and proper document completion for receiving artwork. Assist in inventory record keeping by entering data into the point-of-sale system. The intern will be entrusted  with the task of completing and organizing consignor reference books.
  • At completion of internship, intern is required to create and submit a report on each area of assignment. The intern is encouraged to make recommendations regarding AHACC operations, giving constructive feedback by identifying strengths as well as areas for improvement in this report.

  • Good communication skills, whether written or oral articulating ideas clearly. Also, being able to listen attentively and ask questions to clarify meaning is necessary for this internship.
  • Employs originality, inventiveness, and resourcefulness in the workplace, while independently looking for ways to improve the workplace and accomplish tasks.
  • Complies with procedures and workplace policies; demonstrates honesty, fairness, and respect.
  • Provide exemplary customer service when working in the shop.

  • Plans, prioritizes, and adapts work goals to develop a timeline to achieve goals and projects during course of internship.
  • Understands basic Internet and email safety. Follows workplace protocol to maintain the security of information and facilities.
  • Assume various roles and meet organizational expectations regarding work schedule, behavior, appearance, and communication.
