Event Series:
Saint John’s Bible – The Pentateuch
The Alleghany Highlands Arts and Craft Center is pleased to be able to host a volume of the Heritage Edition of the St. John’s Bible Monday, October 20th thru Wednesday, October 22nd, 2025. The Bible’s creation was sponsored by St. John’s College in Minnesota. It is the first completely hand-written and hand-illustrated bible produced since Guttenberg invented the printing press around 1450. The Bible is in 7 volumes and the Center will have the volume that includes the Pentateuch (Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers and Deuteronomy). The illuminations are fascinating modern interpretations of important events revealed in the scriptures. All the calligraphy was painstakingly done by Donald Jackson, calligrapher to Queen Elizabeth. The volume is currently on loan to Grace Episcopal Church in Lexington, VA, and is being shared, with the Center.
This Pop-Up exhibit will be displayed during business hours, 10:00 am to 4:30 pm (only 3 days, Mon – Wed). Docents from the Church will assist anyone wishing to view and explore the volume. All exhibits at the Center are free to the public.
